Another great post on Midwife Thinking. This time, a guest post on trauma and birth—looking at the consequences of a traumatic and/or mismanaged birth experience. This post covers PTSD, some aspects of postnatal depression and the potentially “high expectations” of birthing women and their birth experiences. A really insightful read!

Abstract

This study tested the proposal that impaired retrieval of specific autobiographical memories is a risk factor for psychological disturbance after trauma exposure. Trainee firefighters (N = 60) were assessed during training (before trauma exposure) on the Autobiographical Memory Test, Clinician Administered PTSD Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and Traumatic Events Questionnaire. Participants were reassessed 4 years later (N = 46) on the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale and BDI-II. All participants had been exposed to multiple traumatic events, and 15% met criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder. Impaired retrieval of specific memories in response to positive cues prior to trauma exposure significantly predicted posttraumatic stress severity after trauma exposure. These findings provide initial evidence that impaired specific retrieval of memories may be a risk factor for posttraumatic stress.

A new protest movement sparked by a policeman’s ill-judged advice to women students to “avoid dressing like sluts” has taken root in the US and Canada.

Thousands of people - some dressed in jeans, others more provocatively - are taking part in marches, or “SlutWalks”.

The aim, say organisers, is to highlight a culture in which the victim rather than rapist or abuser is blamed.

Sorry if we woke you in the middle of the night
But someone in your neighborhood is fighting for his life.
Sorry if we block the road and make you turn around,
But there’s been a bad wreck with dying children on the ground.

When you see us coming you’ll understand
Let us have the right-of-way someone needs a helping hand.
Sometimes a child is choking, sometimes a broken leg.
Sometimes a heart stops beating, and when we get there it’s too late.
So if you see us crying when we think we’re alone
You’ll know we had a “bad” one and we’re feeling mighty down

We don’t do it for the money — you know we don’t get paid.
We don’t do it for the glory but for the life that might be saved.
Somewhere deep within us our souls are crying out
“We’re here to help our neighbors out in their hour of pain and doubt.”
God gave us something special to help us see you through
We do it ‘cause we love you, and we care about you too.

This was the case with Adele’s “Someone Like You” and OneRepublic’s “Secrets.” They are two of my favorite songs, so I decided to mix them together and see what I could come up with.

I know I typically blog about psychology, so to relate playing the piano to psychology, I’ll tell you that when I play the piano, it is one of the few times that I feel like I am completely and totally in the present. And, amazingly, when I play the piano I can stay in the present moment for hours and hours at a time. Sometimes I leave the music hall and have no idea that 6 hours passed.

I find that staying in the present moment is incredibly challenging. My mind wanders, I think about the past and future, and as a result I completely miss the sound of the creek that runs through my college campus. In my Theoretical Approaches to Psychotherapy class we had to do an exercise where we worked on staying in the present, and it was exhausting. To try and catch yourself every time your mind drift is pretty difficult, and to not let your mind wander is even more difficult.

After the exercise I told myself that I wanted to try and spend 10 minutes every day just being in the present. No distractions. It’s hard, but when I play the piano, I’m fully in the present. I can’t think about anything that might be bothering me or any of my stresses because learning a song takes my full, undivided attention. And inevitably, after leaving the music hall, I feel refreshed and less stressed. So maybe there is something to be said for pushing our worries and stresses aside and soaking up the present as best we can.
